Clear Aligners & Invisalign in Silver Spring, MD
Want straighter teeth without metal brackets and wires? Clear aligners are thin, custom-made plastic trays that gradually move your teeth into place. They're nearly invisible and you can take them out to eat. At Tran Orthodontics, we primarily use Invisalign. Dr. Tuan Tran is a certified Invisalign and Invisalign Teen provider and treats patients at our Silver Spring, Wheaton and Gaithersburg offices.
How Clear Aligners Work
Treatment starts with a careful exam. The orthodontist then plans each tooth movement with 3-D computer software. A series of aligners is made from that plan, often anywhere from about 12 to 48 trays. You wear each set for about two weeks before moving on to the next. Step by step, your teeth shift toward the final position your orthodontist prescribed.
For aligners to work, you need to wear them most of the day. Invisalign recommends 20 to 22 hours a day. Take them out only to eat, drink anything other than water, brush and floss.

Are Clear Aligners Right for You?
Aligners can treat many common problems, including crowding, spacing and some bite issues. They aren't right for everyone. Invisalign generally isn't intended for growing children, and some complex bite or jaw problems are better treated with braces. Only an orthodontist can examine your teeth and tell you whether aligners will get the result you want.
That's why choosing an orthodontist matters. Orthodontists finish several more years of specialty training after dental school. Dr. Tran earned his Certificate in Orthodontics and an M.S. from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery and has more than 20 years of experience.
Clear Aligners for Adults
Many of our patients are adults, and it's never too late to improve your smile. Teeth can be moved at any age if your gums and bone are healthy. Adults often choose aligners because they're discreet at work and easy to clean around. Learn more about adult braces and orthodontics for adults.
Invisalign Teen
Teens who qualify can use Invisalign Teen, a version designed for teenagers. Traditional braces are still the best choice for most teens, and Dr. Tran will tell you honestly which option fits your teen's case. See Braces for Kids & Teens.
After Aligner Treatment
Like braces, aligners need a retention phase. You'll wear clear or fixed retainers to keep your teeth from drifting back. In most cases we recommend at least 24 months. See Retention.

Clear Aligner FAQ
Are clear aligners as effective as braces?
For many cases, they can be. For some complex problems, braces may give more control. Dr. Tran will recommend the option that works best for your teeth.
Do aligners hurt?
You may feel pressure for a day or two when you switch to a new set. That's a sign your teeth are moving.
Can I get Invisalign from my general dentist instead?
Some dentists offer it, but an orthodontist has specialty training in tooth movement and bite correction and can tell you whether aligners are the right choice.
